Imagine your classroom with challenges to solve, opportunities to create and students who are engaged. In this session, participants will have HANDS ON experience with a number of engaging kits to promote interactive learning. Throughout the session, you will have an opportunity to EXPLORE, CREATE and PLAY! Any member can sign out all demonstrated kits and books FREE from the ATA library. Participants should come armed with a mobile device to navigate the Association library and begin requesting materials before they leave the workshop. Every teacher is guaranteed a take-away!

The Thinking Strategies Placemat is a powerful digital learning tool. Made from a collaboration of 11 Alberta school districts including Rocky View, provides teachers with research based, highly effective thinking strategies for teachers to embed in instruction during different phases of the learning process. This series will dive deep into specific phases of learning, looking closely at the recommended strategies, and how they support student learning within the ELA/SS context. Components of the series will be differentiated for middle school and high school context.

A much anticipated and requested resource, the Association is pleased to share this toolkit with members across Alberta. Participants will engage in interactive activities to discover the interconnected roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in the field experience component of the preservice teacher preparation program, from cooperating teachers, student teachers, school leaders, students and parents to university personnel, Alberta Education and the Association.

Informed by current research and educational trends, this online and print resource is chock full of practical ideas, strategies, templates and useful links to services and information, legal considerations, and more to promote successful professional field experiences for our future teachers and meaningful professional development (leadership) opportunities for cooperating teachers.

How does hope play a role in our teaching and learning? Potential does not get reached. A student falls through the cracks. A teacher battles family and personal issues. Each one of us face hardship through our journey of life. When life hits us hard, it brings out one of two responses: we either give up, or fight through. It is when we fight through that growth and potential are reached. Hope enables us to fight. Building resiliency is paramount to push through hardship, and harbouring hope in our lives is vital to resiliency.

Teaching for conceptual understanding provides teachers with the freedom to design learning opportunities that engage and excite children while helping them to develop deep transferable learning around core concepts and competences. To achieve the potential for deep understanding requires a re-thinking of how curriculum is planned for and implemented. During this highly practical session, Garfield will bring clarity to what it means to teach for conceptual understanding and will provide a powerful approach for planning around a central concept, related concepts and rich provocative challenges. The session will model the use of concept-driven lessons that are designed to promote rich critical and creative inquiry and will provide a selection of strategies for daily instruction that support nurturing conceptual understanding.

In this Breakout Activity, small groups will work together to crack the code, and save the amusement park! Based on the basics of grammar, this particular game is designed for upper Div 2 and Div 3 kids. It is one of many breakout games available (for all curriculum areas) available on the Breakout EDU website. If you are not familiar with a breakout...it is like an escape room but without actually locking any students in rooms! Students have to find/use the clues to “break into” a locked box. Students use their curiosity and collaboration skills in ways they never imagined they would in a classroom! _x000D_

After we play the game, you will get an introduction to the Breakout EDU site and have a chance to explore! There are games for free as well as on the paid site. Some games you need the kit for, others are purely digital… there is something for every grade and curriculum area! Bring your chromebook/taptop and prepare to stretch your brain!

Il n’est pas facile pour un enseignant seul de répondre à la diversité des besoins des élèves qui lui sont confiés. Lors de cette session, vous apprendrez à mettre en place au sein de votre école un modèle d’approche collaborative mettant en valeur la richesse de la collaboration entre les intervenants scolaires. L’approche collaborative met l’accent sur le modèle de réponse à l’intervention (RAI) et sur l’importance de la collecte de données afin d’orienter les discussions. Le but étant toujours de poser des actions concrètes au sein de l’école pour assurer la réussite de tous nos élèves. En participant à cette session, vous apprendrez comment des écoles et des conseils scolaires ont réussi à implanter cette approche et ainsi à mieux répondre aux besoins de tous les élèves.

The stories of our lived experienced through teaching and leading can provide us opportunities for reflection, change and growth. Participants will reflect on the power of stories, ways stories can be used and how to craft effective ones that will both engage and move listeners. The focus will be on the use of stories in educational settings such as meetings, presentations and blogs. Participants will leave with tools to begin creating and sharing their stories immediately!
