The Highs and Lows of Taking a Leave of Absence

Feedback form is now closed.
This session will focus on the physical and psychological challenges of taking a leave of absence from work. Whether you are an educator who is returning from a leave or considering one in the future, we want to talk to you and hear what you have to say during this interactive presentation.

We will cover a range of topics including:
-The challenges, both mental and physical, of returning to the demands of full-time teaching/administrating
-Returning to a familiar role in the face of a new identity (parent, survivor, mental-health patient, etc...) and how our self-perception changes after a leave as well as the way we are viewed by our colleagues (or the way we think we are viewed)
-How we find a 'new normal' in balancing family and work or new health requirements and work
-Self-care in the face of new challenges (time, health, etc...)

The major point that we want to bring forward is the benefit to our profession when we offer time off to educators who need space to balance other areas of their lives. People take time off to focus on something other than work for a period of time. Ideally, when they return, they bring new ideas, perspectives and energy to their work. It is easy to feel scared and negative about taking a leave and returning to work and it is easy to assume that you will have less time and energy and thus be less of a teacher. We would like to offer a positive perspective, which focuses on the creation of diversity in our profession, the retention of excellent employees and the rejuvenation required for those who care for others. These positive benefits, which ultimately contribute to the increased well being of our students and the betterment of our schools.
