Artists learn by studying the techniques used by the greats. They improve through practicing those techniques and then experimenting with them. In ELA, we so often focus prescribed formats such as the PR and the CARL that we seem to lose the artistry, especially in favor of that much sought after critical voice. I would like to suggest that by looking for and discussing technique and structure through the study of mentor texts, not only will students improve their writing, but also their ability to find patterns in the texts they read, an essential skill required for analysis. By emulating great pieces of writing to practice these techniques, students can develop their own voice and skill set that will benefit them in all their writing endeavours.
