Bringing Indigenous Perspectives to K- 8 Readers through Balanced Literacy

This session will focus on how Indigenous education can be delivered through balanced literacy programs. Participants will explore authentic Indigenous resources and learn strategies which will assist in sharing Indigenous perspectives, reconciliation and treaty education. Critical inquiry, 21st century fluencies and progressive ways of teaching and assessment through balanced literacy will be presented and discussed. The infusion of Indigenous education into the professional practice of Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators will be strengthened with an honest overview of available high-quality Canadian resources.

Three expected outcomes of presentation:

1. To enhance educator knowledge in incorporating Indigenous Education into balanced literacy programs
2. To strengthen educator professional practice within 21st century fluencies and assessment with Indigenous education resources
3. To provide an overview of quality Canadian balanced literacy resources
