Popular music programming is a great way to engage and attract students to music education.
Even though these programs are in their infancy, they can stand alone or supplement traditional
band or choral programs. This session will have a two-fold purpose. The first part will include a
discussion about setting up a popular music program based around guitar education. For this, we
will examine the www.gslakieguitar.com program. Secondly, a clinic on beginner guitar pedagogy
will be given to show music educators (guitar players and non-players alike) how to start their novice students correctly. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own guitar and join in on ways to start beginner players. Ten guitars will be available at the session for use. This session is ideal for band/choral teachers interested in starting guitar/popular music programs at their school.
